After deeply exploring almost every major dirt road off Arizona highway 95 into Kofa National Wildlife Refuge north of Yuma, Arizona, it was too tempting to take a short trip south, then east to Gila Bend and southward again to Organ Pipe National Wildlife Refuge. I had been there in February, 2025 and liked it a lot. Credit Twin Peaks campground in the heart of the refuge for maintaining the magnet that drew me back. Well-designed, it offers comfortable camp sites for every level of camping style, from monster motorhomes towing cars to minimalist tent lovers and every other type in between. As such, places can often be louder than others; it is remarkably quiet considering the number of visitors it hosts at any one time. It is a destination, after all, and so folks tend to remain longer, relax more, and walk when using campground services.
The desert flora that abounds there provides the Organ Pipe National Wildlife Refuge its namesake, for which it is justly famous. Organ pipe cactus grows here in abundance, along with many other species of cactus and other desert plant life not found in comparable abundance outside of the Sonoran Desert.
As soon as I have a bit more time I’ll add more images to this gallery. Be sure to come back and check what’s new.
